GARRETT, John Robert

1843 - 1903

John Robert Garrett was born at Victoria Terrace, 1 Woodbridge Road, Ipswich in 1843 and baptised at St Stephen's Church, Ipswich on 21 June 1843, son of Garrett Garrett (1808-23 June 1890), an iron merchant, and his wife Elizabeth Smyth (1818-1884), Elizabeth was a sister of Edward Robert Smythe and Thomas Smythe, who married at Ipswich in 1837. In 1861, John was living at 172 Woodbridge Road, Ipswich with his parents, 52-year-old Garrett and 42-year-old Elizabeth, with ten siblings including George Henry Garrett, all born in Ipswich. John married at Hadleigh, Suffolk on 21 June 1868, Margaret Fanny Ablitt (1847-1934),only daughter of Alfred Ablitt, the registrar, and in 1871, a 26-year-old relieving officer, living with his Ablitt in-laws at Shilling Street, Lavenham with his 22 year old wife Margaret and two children Sidney and Florence. In 1881 still living at Shilling Street, Lavenham with his in-laws, 72 year old Alfred and 58 year old Harriet, and his 32 year old wife Margaret and children Sidney Robert 12, Florence Fannie 11, Percy Ablitt 9, Ethel Maud 7, Nellie Bertha 5, Frederic Claude 2 and newly born Margaret Kate, all born at Lavenham. As J. R. Garrett of Lavenham, he exhibited at the Bury St Edmund's Fine Art Society in 1882. John Robert Garrett was of Hurrell House, Bildeston, Suffolk, when he died on 30 December 1903, aged 60.
