HUFTON, Susan

As Susan Mary Kearley, she was born at Worcester on 1 October 1957, daughter of David Eustace Meader Kearley (25 May 1930-11 July 2011) and his wife Nita Mary née Lashmar (30 August 1928-14 November 2009), who married at the Isle of Wight, Hampshire in 1953. Susan Kearley married at Kettering, Northamptonshire in 1980, Robert J. Hufton, and works under the name of Sue Hufton. Sue was educated at Kettering High School for Girls and studied Calligraphy and Bookbinding at the University of Roehampton from 1977-1980 as a significant part of her B.Ed. degree returning to the full-time Diploma courses 1983-1986. In 1986, she was awarded a Crafts Council Advanced Training Grant to study letter drawing and carving with Tom Perkins. Sue is a Fellow of the Society of Scribes and Illuminators and a Full Member of the Letter Exchange. She has exhibited at Chepstow Museum; Ditchling Museum; Wolesey Fine Arts; Craft Council; Minneapolis Institute of Art and other venues in the U.S.A., also at the Victoria & Albert Museum, London and in 2018 at the Lettering Arts Centre at Snape Maltings Galleries, Suffolk, commemorating 30 years of Memorials by Artists, founded by Harriet Frazer, working to support the creation of beautifully designed and created memorials. Sue was a short course tutor at West Dean College and has taught in workshops and summer schools in the UK, Belgium, Finland, Canada, USA, Australia, and Japan. She lived at Bury St Edmund's, Suffolk before moving to Cambridge. The author of 'Step-by-Step Calligraphy' (1997).
