BUCKMASTER, Emma

1957 - ?

As Emma Elizabeth Stanier, she was born at The Louise Margaret Hospital, Aldershot, Hampshire on 13 May 1957, eldest of the four daughters of Field Marshal Sir John Wilfred Stanier (6 October 1925–10 November 2007) and his wife Cicely Constance Lambert (born 8 March 1930), elder daughter of Lt Cdr Denis Lambert, who married at Danbury Parish Church, Essex on 19 November 1955. Emma married at Kensington, London on 12 March 1983, Simon John Buckmaster (born 1 April 1956) and paints under the name of Emma Buckmaster. Emma studied at Exeter University 1976-1979, University of Essex 2000-2003, and printmaking at Cambridge School of Art 2006-2009. Emma’s atmospheric prints are inspired by the East Anglian landscape, fishing boats drawn up on the beach, a sea mist, glimpsed figures on the shoreline, the east wind and ancient oak trees introduce a sense of nostalgia and memory revisited. The prints are created using a limited palette and complex etching and relief techniques. Influences include the work of the early British landscape artists as well as the etchers and engravers who translated their work to print. She has exhibited at the Royal Academy Summer Exhibitions; Norwich Castle Museums and Art Galleries, Waterperry, Oxford. Together with Janet French they jointly chaired Gainsborough's House Print Workshop for three years and become Fellows of the Society of Botanical Artists in 2019. French and Buckmaster often work as a team to create unique etchings of British trees printed onto paper made from the leaves of the tree itself. The Tree Portraits are held in private and public collections worldwide. Emma and Janet's story was featured on the BBC2 documentary about the RA Summer Exhibition 2016, and in the FT How to Spend it Magazine 2014. A member of Suffolk Open Studios from her studio at Moores Farm, Felsham, Bury St Edmund's, Suffolk.
