DEBNEY, Beryl
Beryl May Debney was born in Pembroke, Wales in 1925, daughter of Edwin Debney (26 November 1892-9 September 1965), a police officer, and his wife Gwendoline Margaret née Powell (1895-1964), who married at Pembroke in 1918 and by 1939 were living at 15 Hanover Court, Hammersmith, London. Known as 'Debbie' she worked at St Ives in Cornwall in the 1950s and learned her craft in a group led by renowned potters Bernard Leach (5 January 1887–6 May 1979) and Shōji Hamada (9 December 1894–5 January 1978). From 1964 Debbie's workshop and kiln were at her home at Dickory Cottage, 46 Oakwood Park, Yoxford, Suffolk and she was a part-time tutor in pottery at Ipswich School of Art, one of her pupils was Pat Todd. In the year 2000 she moved to Milestone Cottage, 178 High Street, Wickham Market, Suffolk. Beryl May Debney died at Wickham Market on 11 January 2010, she was unmarried.
