MILLER, Pippa

1905 - 2006

Philippa Ruth Miller was born at Oulton Broad, Suffolk on 10 January 1905, daughter of Frederick Miller, yacht builder & engineer, and his wife Susan (Daisy) Beckham née Goff (20 September 1877-20 June 1968), youngest daughter of the late Edgar Goff, an architect, of Hollywood, North Lowestoft, who married at St Margaret's Church, Lowestoft on 1 March 1904. In 1911, Pippa was a 6-year-old, living at Ingleboro, Oulton Broad with her parents, 47-year-old Frederick and 33-year-old Susan, with her sibling brother newly born Martin Edgar. Pippa studied at the Lowestoft School of Arts and Crafts and exhibited at the Walker Art Gallery in 1924 from Old Mill House, Oulton Broad and the 1929 Lowestoft Town Guide carried a Pippa Miller painting on its cover. She travelled extensively with her father, painting and sketching in Bordeaux, Florence, Rome as well as the Scilly Isles, Isle of Wight, the Lake District and elsewhere in the U.K. In 1930 she moved to Sprowston, Norwich, from where she was a member of the Norfolk & Norwich Art Circle 1933-1976. She taught art and craft at what eventually became Blyth-Jex Comprehensive School at Norwich and in 1939, was a secondary school teacher, living at 34 Patricia Road, Norwich. A painter with the Broads as her great love and she celebrated her centenary year with two popular exhibitions in Norwich Cathedral. Philippa Ruth Miller died at Norwich on 16 May 2006, she was unmarried. Her work 'An Artist's War' was exhibited in Norwich Cathedral in January 2005 to mark her centenary, and a second exhibition featured her remarkable Broadland watercolours which were painted primarily in the first half of the last century.
