BUDD, Herbert Ashwin

1881 - 1950

Herbert Ashwin Budd was born at Ford Green, Smallthorne, Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire on 10 January 1881 and baptised at Norton-in-the-Moors on 27 March 1881, third child and only son of Thomas Budd (1845-1928), a surgeon's assistant, and his wife Henrietta Octavia née Ashwin (1850-1921), who married at Sneyd Holy Trinity Church on 13 December 1871. By 1891 they had moved to Cooper Street, Wolstanton, Staffordshire, 47-year-old Thomas and 41-year-old Henrietta, with 10-year-old Herbert Ashwin, a scholar, and his three sisters, Lena Maud 18, Caroline Elizabeth 15, both pupil teachers, and Marian Elsie 8. Herbert was an apprentice lithographer at Allbut & Stanley, printers at Hanley and on 1 November 1901, elected a member of the Amalgamated Society of Lithographic Artists but resigned the following year. Herbert studied at Hanley School of Art 1903-1907 and won a scholarship to the Royal College of Art, South Kensington 1907-1910 and in 1911, a 30-year-old 'artist painter' living at 241 King's Road, Chelsea, with co-occupier, 27-year-old Scottish 'artist painter' John Daniel Revel (1881-1967). An artist who painted portraits and landscapes in oils and exhibited regularly at the Royal Academy 1908-1948 including in 1910 two oil paintings 'A Morning Walk' and 'At the Door' also an Associate of the Royal College of Art from 1907 and a member of the Royal Institute of Oil Painters from 1921. He also exhibited at the New English Art Club and the Paris Salon and in 1933 exhibited at the Ipswich Art Club from 76 Fulham Road, London S.W.3, an oil 'Summer' and in 1935 two oils 'The Adventure' and 'Making the Rick' and during the 1930s he did work for London Transport, designing posters. He married at Chelsea in 1915, Helen Margaret MacKenzie (16 September 1879-4 May 1966), also an artist. A tutor at St Martin's School of Art 1929-1949 and in 1939, a teacher of art, living at 10 Sydney Close, Kensington, London with his wife Helen. Herbert Ashwin Budd died at 10 Avenue Studios, Sydney Close, Chelsea on 3 June 1950, the Hanley Art Gallery had a memorial exhibition the following year. His works are in the collections of the Imperial War Museum, Royal Society of Chemistry, City of London Corporation, Potteries Museum & Art Gallery. He signed his work 'H. A. Budd'.
