CHAMPAIN, Philippa
As Philippa Marion Carr, she was born at Repton, Derbyshire in July 1961, daughter of Douglas John Carr (12 October 1920-13 August 1991) and his wife Pamela née Temperley (1927-2013), who married at Amersham in 1958. Philippa married at Derby in 1992, John Philip Bateman-Champain and she paints under the name of Philippa Champain. Philippa works as an art therapist with children and adolescents and having attended a weekend workshop in woodcut printing, joined Sudbourne Park Printmakers. Philippa has continued to explore woodcut with the boldness and simplicity of black and white prints as well as experimenting with diverse ways of introducing colour, including printing with colour onto a darker background introducing a dark, rather than a white outline. Her inspiration is drawn from nature and relationship with plants and animals and some of her prints incorporate a sense of narrative. More recent work has led to further layered work using screen-printed backgrounds over-printed with collagraph and linocut. Philippa exhibits from Reydon, Southwold, Suffolk with Suffolk Open Studios as well as with Sudbourne Park Printmakers.
