MANN, Lily
Lily Mann was born at Earls Colne, Essex in 1862, daughter of Thomas Mann (1813-2 April 1889) and his wife Sarah née Fitch (1819-August 1896), who married at Earls Colne in 1847. In 1871, Lily was living at High Street, Earls Colne with her parents, 68-year-old Thomas, a timber merchant and farmer, and 61-year-old Sarah, with seven siblings Thomas 20, Jane 18, Walter 16, Mary Ann 14, Julia Amelia 12, Alfred 10 and Arthur 7. Lily was educated at Earls Colne and was successful at South Kensington School of Art examinations which were held in Earls Colne Literary Institution on 5-7 May 1881. A painter of landscapes and still life and a member of the Ipswich Fine Art Club 1891-1896 where she exhibited from Earls Colne, Essex, six works 1891-1893 including in 1893, two oils ‘Colne Priory’ and ‘Fruit and Flowers’. In 1901, the family home was a small school, Priory Farm School, with her sisters, 44-year-old Marian as principal and 42 Julia Amelia as house mistress, with 38-year-old Lily, a governess. Ten years later now 'Priory School' Lily was the art teacher and in 1911 one of her pupils was Ethel Maud Percival. Lily Mann died at Priory School House, Earls Colne on 14 August 1938, aged 76, she was unmarried.
