WELLS, Peter

1919 - 2013

Peter John Wells was born at Edmonton, London on 12 January 1919, son of Herbert Percy Wells (29 May 1890-1972), a shipping clerk, and his wife Annie Florence née McMillan (9 June 1889-17 October 1976), who married at Edmonton in 1914 and in 1939 were living at 15 Ground Parade, Mans Queens Avenue, Hornsey, Middlesex. Peter was educated privately and studied at the University of London and the University of Manchester and later at Hornsey School of Art 1952-1954. He married in Belgium in 1946, Elisabeth van der Meulen (1915-1967), they had one daughter Mary, and secondly at Braintree, Essex in 1988, Gillian Anne Hayes-Newington. Peter Wells was also an important figure in the Poetry world and about the time of the Second World War was editing 'Poetry Folios'. He exhibited at Hornsey Artists 1953; The Crest Gallery, London 1982;Ellingham Mill Art Society 1984; the Loggia Gallery 1988; Fermoy Gallery, Kings Lynn, Norfolk and elsewhere. A painter and a poet, he founded 'The One Time Press'. Peter John Wells lived at Model Farm, Linstead Magna, Halesworth, Suffolk and died on 16 September 2013, aged 94.
