MUNUO, Naomi
As Naomi Holland, she was born in Canada in 1970, from a family of artists, her parents both studied sculpture at the Royal Academy Schools in the late 60s and they still paint and sculpt in their studios in France. Naomi studied at Kent Institute of Art and Design, Maidstone, now the University for the Creative Arts 1988-1989, St Martin's School of Art, London 1989-1992, where she took a degree in fashion design, and at Goldsmiths College 1999-2000. Naomi married at Kensington & Chelsea, London in June 1993, Andrew Ikaa Munuo and paints under Naomi Munuo. At St Martin's she became interested in loosely illustrating the human figure using richly textured, irregular shaped surfaces and her body of work is the result of an artistic career that has spanned many years. Her art inspirations stem from 20th century paintings and art from a diverse range of cultures and historical perspectives, often exploring the relationship between the object and its environment using colourful images and objects set in abstracted patterned environments going back to an early interest in Japanese art. Texture is created using mixed media in many of her works on paper which involves layering collage, wax resist, batik, ink, oil and pastels, more recently simply using paint. Since 1997 she has exhibited work at the Royal Academy Summer Exhibitions and Collyer Bristow Gallery, London. In 2004 Naomi relocated to Ipswich where her work has been represented by the John Russell Gallery in Ipswich and at Hatfield Hines Gallery in Holt, Norfolk and has also exhibited elsewhere including Art Fusion Gallery in Miami Florida. Her work is held in the collections of many local patrons.
