KELL, Charles

1817 - 1906

Charles Kell was baptised at St Mary’s Church, Woodbridge, Suffolk on 11 April 1817, son of William Kell (1784-7 March 1847), a painter & decorator, and his wife Susanna née Young (1786-1867), and was a brother to Robert Kell and his grandson was Frederick Kell. Charles married at St Matthew's Church, Ipswich on 19 September 1841, Catherine Nichols. In 1851, a 34-year-old ornamental painter, living at the Thoroughfare, Woodbridge with children, Catherine 9, William 7 and Charles 6, and in 1861, a 43-year-old master painter, plumber & glazier with his 39-year-old wife Catherine and their daughter, 19-year-old Catherine, his sons were living with their grandmother, 73-year-old Susan Kell, a widow. Charles exhibited at the Woodbridge Fine Art Exhibition at New Street Assembly Rooms in 1880 from Woodbridge, three paintings two entitled 'Rabbits', and 'Glass with Field Flowers', in 1883 when the exhibition was held at the Lecture Hall, Woodbridge 'Retreat of the Russions', 'Birds', 'Herrings on a Plate', 'Shrimps on a Marble Slab', 'Gipsies Dancing', 'Ferry Quay' and 'Codlings' and in 1887 nine oils, two entitled 'Hunting', and 'Dogs after Wildfowl', 'White Herrings', 'Dead Rat', 'Codlings and Sprats', 'Rabbits and Partridges', 'Mackerel and Lobster' and 'Gipsy Dance' and in 1889 at the Assembly Room at the Bull Hotel, Woodbridge several oil paintings. He also exhibited at Ipswich Fine Art Club from Woodbridge in 1884 four paintings, 'Codling and Sprats', 'Codlings', 'Pink Shrimp's' and 'Brown Shrimps', and two in 1885 ‘Dead Game’ and ‘Herrings on Plate’. He also exhibited at the Bury St Edmunds and West Suffolk Fine Art Society in 1889, 'A Study of Fish'. In 1891, a painter & decorator, still living at New Street, with his wife Catherine. From 1 November 1900, Charles Kell and his wife Catherine were elected as inmates to Seckford Alms Houses, and he died at Woodbridge in 1906, aged 89. Two of his oil on panel paintings 'St Mary's Church, Woodbridge' and 'St John's Church, Woodbridge' were sold at Neal, Sons & Fletcher auction at Woodbridge on 22 November 2006.
