DUFF, John Robert Keitley

1862 - 1938

John Robert Keitley Duff was born at 20 De Beauvoir Square, Hackney, London on 22 January 1862, son of Robert Duff (1821-1863), a watch manufacturer in London, and his Scottish born wife Janet, who in 1871 was a 45-year-old widow, living off investments at Albion Road, Stoke Newington, Hackney, London with 9-year-old John Robert and a 24-year-old servant Emily Robertson, born in Suffolk. Duff was educated at Bishops Stortford, Hertfordshire and admitted pensioner at Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge at Easter 1884, graduating B.A. and LL.B. in 1887 and M.A. in 1891 and was called to the Bar, Middle Temple. In 1891, a 29-year-old barrister-at-law, living at Sunny Gardens, Hendon and later studied art at the Slade School of Fine Art under Alphonse Legros (1837-1911). He married at Islington, London in 1892, Emma Louise Clark (1871-26 September 1946) and in 1901, an artist, living at 5 St James Square, Kensington, London with his family and in 1911, a 49-year-old artist painter, living at 100 Sunningdale Road, Hendon with his 40-year-old wife Emma, and children Keith Mitchell Keitley 16, Jean Eliza Keitley 16, Vickman Keitley 11 and Lesley Florence Keitley 6. A painter in oil, watercolour and pastel and an etcher, often featuring birds and animals in his work. Duff exhibited at the Royal Academy 1891-1925 and with the New English Art Club from 1894 and was elected a member of the Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours in 1913 and of the Royal Society of Painter-Etchers in 1919. He exhibited at the Ipswich Fine Art Club from 100 Sunningdale Road, Hendon, London in 1923, a mezzotint 'The Rickyard'. Shortly before his death he donated a quantity of his watercolours, pastels, etchings, and enamels to the Southwold Museum in Suffolk and others to Hendon Central Library. John Robert Keitley Duff died at 'Oakview', 100 Sunningdale Road, Hendon, on 26 September 1938, aged 76 being survived by his wife, two sons and two daughters. The author of 'Pastel: A Manual for Beginners' (1910).
