Vaughan Keal

Vaughan Scott Keal was born at Portsmouth, Hampshire in 1964, son of Reginald Vernon Keal (1922-7 April 2016) and his wife Marie Yvonne née Boulter (born 1928), who married at Portsmouth in 1949, the family had a Royal Navy background. Vaughan was educated at The Royal Hospital School and studied at The Oxford School of Architecture and is a graduate of the Royal College of Art, London, being tutored by Prof. Sir Christopher Frayling (born 1946), Head of The Arts Council and, being nominated for both Kennedy and Fulbright Scholarships, was awarded the Dean's Scholarship at the University of California, Los Angeles. Vaughan set up independently while still a student at the Royal College of Art, with a studio on board 'HMS President' on the river Thames, London and, at the age of 27, being sponsored by the Royal Academician, Prof. Theo Crosby (1925-1994) was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts. Vaughan is an architect, being only one of a handful of architects to have gained Planning for 'architecture of the highest order' from the UK Planning Inspectorate and has had a building project listed by English Heritage. Vaughan is also an artist with his work ranging across media from 3D design, buildings & furniture, to artwork in oils, watercolour, pastels, graphic design & photography. His paintings bring forth a naturalistic impact, in his more dramatic pieces he takes bright light and breaks it down, through water or fine sprays of moisture or, equally in the dead calm moody, still, haunting sea frets, where light is obscured. The east coast of Suffolk with big broad landscapes, the quality of light & famous big skies is his inspiration, painting views of Southwold, Suffolk, and the landscapes thereabouts. Vaughan exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1991 also exhibiting at Farnham Maltings, Surrey; Blackthorpe Barn, Bury St Edmund's; Grapevine Gallery, Norwich; the Ferini Art Gallery, Pakenham, Lowestoft; Buckenham Galleries, Southwold and with the Suffolk Open Studios. He married in the Waveney district of Suffolk in 1994, Rachel Joy Copley and lived at Uggeshall, Beccles in Suffolk.
