SOWDEN, Trevor
Trevor B. Sowden was born at Cardiff, Glamorgan on 7 April 1933, son of Reginald Alexander Sowden (29 June 1904-1996), a guard on GWR, and his wife Muriel Amy née Horton (26 December 1907-1996), who married at Cardiff in 1930 and in 1939 were living at Fitzroy Street, Cardiff. Trevor was educated at Hereford High School and Cathays High School, Cardiff and studied at Cardiff College of Art 1950-1954, in the Royal Navy 1954-1956, before resuming his studies at the now University of Wales 1956-1957 from where he obtained his National Diploma of Design (sculpture). Trevor is a graduate art teacher and, as a mature student, took an advanced diploma in Ceramics at Goldsmiths College, London 1979-1980. He married at Ilford, Essex in 1961, Madeleine A. Chabloz and they have a son. After a career in teaching, finally as Head of Faculty of Design and Technology at Newham College, Trevor now works full-time as an artist, an elected member of the East Anglian Group of Marine Artists and was chairman of Gainsborough's House Print Workshop in 1999. Trevor exhibited from 10 Harefield, Long Melford, Suffolk at the 'Visions of Sudbury' show at St Peter's church, Sudbury in 2013, a linocut 'The Hospital, Long Melford'. He has also exhibited at Heritage Centre, Aberdare Glamorgan; South Woodford Library, London; Churchills Gallery, London; Gallery 44, Aldeburgh, Suffolk; Heffer Gallery, Cambridge; Mall Galleries, London; Westcliffe Gallery, Sheringham, Norfolk; Pond Gallery at Snape Maltings Galleries, Suffolk; Sea Pictures Gallery, Clare, Suffolk; Galerie Municipale, Chateau Neuf, France and Galerie Municipale, Jarnac, France and elsewhere. His work is held in private collections in France, Switzerland, Italy, America and the UK.
