BERRY, Penny

1941 - 2021

As Penelope Jane Paterson, she was born at Tonbridge, Kent in 1941, daughter of James Paterson (30 November 1911-30 April 1977), a civil servant, and his wife Florence A. née Taylor (3 November 1913-), who married at St Mary's Church, Rusthall, Tunbridge Wells on 1 June 1935 and in 1939 were living at 5 Southwood Avenue, Royal Tunbridge Wells, Kent. Penny studied at Brighton Art School and the Northeast Essex School of Art. As Penelope J. Paterson, she married at Tunbridge Wells in 1986, Kenneth R. Berry and worked under the name of Penny Berry but sometimes as Penny Berry Paterson. Penny studied printmaking as a mature student at the Colchester Institute after which she set up her own studio. In 1984 she joined the Suffolk Craft Society of which she became an honorary member and was also a founder member of 12 Printmakers and active in the Gainsborough's House Gallery. Penny specialised in framed, limited editions of original prints, often depicting colourful images inspired by coastal and nautical themes, architectural subjects, industrial buildings, and the Suffolk countryside. She produced relief prints, using lino, card, and wood, occasionally diversifying into the media of dry points, collagraphs and monoprints. Penny exhibited from Oak Cottage, Lower Road, Middleton, Sudbury, Suffolk at the 'Visions of Sudbury' show at St Peter's church, Sudbury in 2007, a monoprint 'Carvings at Salter's Hall' and a linocut 'Misericord Seat at St Gregory's', in 2009 a watercolour 'Spring at Baker's Mill' and in 2013 had a watercolour 'Fertile Patch' on show. Penelope Jane Berry died on 14 March 2021.
