Barbaba Howey

Barbara A. C. Howey was born at Chippenham, Wiltshire in 1954, daughter of Robert Dalzell Howey (9 March 1924-15 June 1998) and his wife Annie née Chapman (19 July 1924-1985), who married at Cambridge in 1946. As a mature student, Barbara graduated B.A. (hons) in Fine Art from Leicester Polytechnic in 1991, followed by an M.A. in Feminism in the Visual Arts at Leeds Arts University in 1992 and in 2001 at Norwich School of Art and Design a Ph.D. in Creative Practice Research. After completing her M.A. in 1992, Barbara commenced teaching at the Norwich School of Art and Design working with students over a range of fine art disciplines at B.A. honours level including, painting, textile culture, sculpture, drawing and video and in a variety of contexts from personal tutorials, seminars, planning exhibitions, critiques, assessment, and lectures. An artist working in oil and watercolour collage, and a founder and chair of Paint Club East and is also a member of an exhibiting artists group 'Clause Four' which consists of artists working in a range of media from video, performance, installation, photography, and painting. In 2012, with three other artists, she worked on a project which is based on a residency undertaken at Orford Ness, a cold war nuclear site in Suffolk. She has exhibited widely in the UK including at Norwich Castle Museums and Art Galleries; Standpoint Gallery, London; Huddersfield Art Gallery, Piazza Shopping Centre, Princess Alexandra Walk, Huddersfield; Outpost, Norwich; Axis Arts, Manchester, Walker Art Gallery, Exeter Phoenix Galleries, Gandy Street, Exeter, also at Columbia University; Pearl Street Gallery, New York and Offit Gallery, New York and in Tokyo. In 2017 she guest edited volume: 3-1/ 3-2 of 'The Journal of Contemporary Painting', exploring the idea of Commitment in Painting, published by Intellect. She has also curated an exhibition focusing on contemporary figurative women painters 'Real Lives – Painted Pictures'. Barbara married at Norwich in 1999 Derek Charles Mace and currently lives and works in Thorpe St Andrew, Norwich.
