Jake Francis

Jake Lee Francis was born at Ipswich in 1992, son of Lee Paul Francis and his wife Christine née Nunn, who married in the Gipping & Hartismere district of Suffolk in 1991. Jake was educated at Stowupland High School, Suffolk 2005-2010 and a fine art graduate from Norwich University of the Arts 2010-2014 taking a master's degree Fine & Studio Art at the University of Brighton 2017-2019. Since graduating from Norwich in 2014, he has worked as a freelance artist both nationally and internationally, spending three years at Camp Emerson, U.S.A., where he was art director. This has included working within the film industry, hosting both group and solo exhibitions, as well as contributing to online editorials. He has also self-published several texts to accompany artistic events, exploring his interest in satirical theory. Begrudging the role of ‘artist’ and its institutions, Jake inevitably relies on its cliches and tropes to make work and progress through its gilded halls, aware of the hypocrisies associated in the process. When delving into the artist’s work, he is caught in the uncomfortable, yet common bind of contemporary ‘progression’; a begrudged purveyor of outdated skills, and an inadequacy to move into modern technologies. It is within this middle ground of aesthetic folly that the artist’s aggravation slips into brief cathartic expression. He has exhibited at 'Art on the Prom' at Felixstowe from The Hedgerows, Church Road, Stowmarket, Suffolk and now lives in Brighton, Sussex and has exhibited at The Lazy Susan Gallery, Manhattan NY, USA; The Espacio Gallery, Shoreditch, London; Air Gallery, Altrincham, Cheshire; CICA Museum, South Korea with solo shows at The Norman Rea Gallery, University of York; Handforth Station Gallery, Manchester; ThirteenA, St Augustine's Street, Norwich and elsewhere.
