EMANUEL, Frank Lewis

1865 - 1948

Frank Lewis Emanuel, was born at Bayswater, London on 15 September 1865, eldest son and second child of Lewis Emanuel (1832-1898), a solicitor, and his wife Julia née Salomons, who married at London City in 1863. Frank was educated at University College School, London and studied at the Slade School of Fine Art under Alphonse Legros (1837-1911) and at the Académie Julian in Paris under William-Adolphe Bouguereau (1825-1905) and Tony Robert-Fleury (1837-1911). In 1911, a 44 year old unmarried pictorial artist, living at 67 Ladbroke Gardens, Kensington with his 67 year old widowed mother Julia. Painter, etcher, illustrator and writer, an opponent of modern art, publishing art criticism and topographical drawings in the 'Architectural Review' and the 'Manchester Guardian' and the author of 'The Illustrators of Montmartre' 1903 and 'Etching and Etchings' (1930) and others. He exhibited at the Paris Salon; and nearly every year at the Royal Academy from 1886; New English Art Club and in Japan, Australia, America, Germany, Holland and elsewhere. He exhibited at the Ipswich Art Club in 1933 from 2 St John's Gardens, Holland Park, London, a pencil drawing 'Cromis Mill, Mousehold. Destroyed 1933' and he produced a large body of work at Walberswick and Southwold in Suffolk and had a show of his watercolours in the Méryon Galleries in 1912, and many of his paintings being reproduced as picture postcards by Raphael Tuck. He taught etching at the Central School of Arts & Crafts 1918–1930 travelling in Europe, South Africa and Ceylon. He married at Amersham, Buckinghamshire in 1909, Florence Crawford-Evans (2 January 1869-1947) and they had one son. In 1939, a married artist & draughtsman, living at St John's Gardens, Holland Park, Kensington with his solicitor brother Charles Herbert Emanuel (1868-1962), Florence was living at Coulsden Surrey. He was of 2 St Johns Gardens, Holland Park, London when he died at St Charles Hospital, Kensington, London on 7 May 1948, aged 83. He signed his works 'Frank L. Emanuel'.
