PARTINGTON, Peter
Peter Norman Marquis Partington was born at Cambridge on 29 September 1941, son of Albert Partington and his wife Florence Alice née Hill. Peter was educated at Poole Grammar School and, as a teenager, Peter lived by Poole Harbour and started sketching at an early age. He studied at Bournemouth and Poole College of Art 1960-1966 and at Hornsey College of Art 1967-1968 with his teenage years proving to have a deep influence upon him. Escaping from school he sat watching the shoreline, with holidays and weekends often spent bird watching and exploring its inlets and unspoilt reaches, where sea and marsh intermingle with woodland and meadow. He married at Poole, Dorset in 1962, Josephine H. Cribb and went on to teach art students for many years but as demand for his original work grew, became a professional painter and printmaker. His work is enlivened by keen observation of bird plumage and behaviour in the field, and his hand-coloured dry-points, etchings, and original water-colours are collected, and Peter has had numerous one-man shows. He also lectures, writes extensively including, amongst others, for 'The Artist' magazine and several books for Collins 'Learn to Paint Birds in Watercolour' which was launched at the Tryon Galleries in Cork Street in 1989, he followed this with three further books 'Learn to Draw Wildlife, 'Learn to Draw Birds' and 'Learn to Draw Farm Animals' and is an illustrator of many books and cards. One of Britain's top wildlife artists and elected to the Society of Wildlife Artists with several pieces of his work in the collection of the International Museum of Wildlife Art. He lives and works in rural Suffolk whose natural riches are now the source of much of his inspiration and he is a member of Suffolk Open Studios from Kettlebaston Hall, Kettlebaston, near Ipswich. He exhibits at the Hunter Gallery in Bury St Edmund's, Suffolk.
