MASSEY, Carole
As Carole Margaret Pope, she was born at Hertford on 8 January 1948, daughter of William Charles Pope and his wife Betty Doreen née Wallace (23 February 1918-20 October 2007), who married at Bishops Stortford, Hertfordshire in 1941. Carole married at Hitchin, Hertfordshire in 1971, Eric James Massey and had a son and a daughter, she paints under the name of Carole Massey. Carole was educated at Welwyn Garden City Grammar School and studied at St Albans School of Art, where her tutors included John Brunsdon and John W. Mills (born 1933), and then at Leicester School of Art, now de Montford University, under Edward Bawden and calligrapher David Howells (1918-2012). After leaving art school Carole followed a successful career as a commercial artist, running her own design business for some thirty years. Carole then returned to her first love of painting, initially gaining a reputation as a portrait painter with subjects including members of the royal family and show business personalities. 2021 marked Carole's 50 years as a professional artist and she is a popular tutor and demonstrator, whose work is in private collections in Europe, the USA, and the Far East. An accomplished all-round artist working in watercolour, water soluble pencils, acrylics, pastel, water-based oils, and mixed media. Carole was honoured by the commission to paint a portrait of Sir Charles Richard Bean (1953-) on his retirement as deputy governor of the Bank of England where the painting now hangs. Carole has exhibited at the Society of Women Artists exhibition at the Mall Galleries, London and has taken part in various exhibitions in Northern France. She is also a best-selling author of eight books on drawing and portraiture as well as how to use water soluble pencils, paint flowers in acrylics and figures in watercolours which are published by Search Press and has also authored articles for leading art magazines including 'Leisure Painter' and produced online tutorials for ArtTutor. She has led many courses in the UK for the Field Studies Council at Flatford Mill Centre, Suffolk, Watershed Studio, St. Osyth, Clacton-on-Sea and Art in Aldeburgh, Suffolk. Carole also demonstrates to art societies throughout the Home Counties and in 2022 led a painting holiday to Le Marche, Italy, and painting holidays in Somerset. Carole lives near Aldeburgh, Suffolk.
