Carole Massey

As Carole Margaret Pope, she was born at Hertford on 8 January 1948, daughter of William Charles Pope and his wife Betty Doreen née Wallace (23 February 1918-20 October 2007), who married at Bishops Stortford, Hertfordshire in 1941. Carole married at Hitchin, Hertfordshire in 1971, Eric J. Massey and had a son and a daughter, she paints under the name of Carole Massey. Carole was educated at Welwyn Garden City Grammar School and studied art at St Albans School of Art and then at Leicester College of Art & Design (now de Montford University) before following a successful career as a commercial artist, running her own design business for some thirty years. Carole then returned to her first love of painting, initially gaining a reputation as a portrait painter with subjects including members of the royal family and show business personalities. Carole is a professional painter, popular tutor and demonstrator, whose work is in private collections in Europe, the USA and the Far East. An accomplished all-round artist working in watercolour, water soluble pencils, acrylics, pastel, water based oils and mixed media and was runner up in the 'Artist and Illustrator' magazine in their 'Artist of the Year' 2010 competition with her painting 'Reflections 3'. Carole has exhibited at the Society of Women Artist exhibition at the Mall Galleries, London and has taken part in various exhibitions in Brittany. She is also a best-selling author of at least eight books on how to use water soluble pencils, painting flowers in acrylics and figures in watercolours including 'Drawing Masterclass-Portraits'. She leads many courses in the UK at popular locations, for the Field Studies Council at Flatford Mill, Suffolk, and Watershed Studio, Essex and tutors courses at Art in Aldeburgh and at The Old School Studios, Whittlesford, Cambridgeshire. Carole also has demonstrations to art societies throughout the Home Counties, including a drawing session for the Suffolk Walking Festival Fringe event and in 2018 at the Mall Galleries, London and at Patchings Art Festival. Carole lives at Fyletts Barn, The Green, Hawstead, Bury St Edmund's, Suffolk.
