CARTER, Nick

Nicholas John Carter was born at Southend-on-Sea, Essex in 1947, son of Sydney John Carter (22 August 1923-3 December 1978) and his wife Joyce A. née Churchill (born 1923), who married at Southend early the same year. Nick graduated from Loughborough College of Art and Design in 1969 with a B.A. (hons) degree in Three-Dimensional Design and has been working in Art and Design ever since. During the 1970s and 80s Nick was a designer for Central Government, Westminster and designed the new office furniture and interiors for the Houses of Parliament, the furniture for Kew Public Records Office and the external seating for Trafalgar Square and the South Bank. He has lectured at the Royal College of Art and the Southend College of Art and was Deputy Group Leader, Furniture & Graphic Design Section, for Essex County Council specialising in educational furniture and interiors. Design Consultant to Fletcher Mayfield and British Petroleum during which time he also developed his ceramic designs. A painter inspired by the meeting of the earth and sky, Nick's paintings in acrylic are of sweeping vibrant horizons in bright clear colours and, in startling contrast, are his crisp detailed pen and ink drawings. Nick has exhibited in London, Manchester, Lincoln, Ipswich, Southwold, Aldeburgh, and Snape Maltings Galleries and in Brittany. In 1998 he moved from Essex to Suffolk and married at Ipswich in 2000, Elizabeth Anderson. A member of the Ipswich Art Society and of Peninsula Crafts and a full member of Suffolk Open Studios from his studio at Crouch House Studio, Grove Lane, off Lings Lane, Chelmondiston, Ipswich where he holds art classes for individuals and small groups with larger groups meeting at designated venues and gives talks to Art Clubs.
