BENNETT, Alan

1945 - 2025

Alan Bennett was born on 1 November 1945. Alan was educated at Lascelles Secondary School, Harrrow and studied at Harrow School of Art and at Sheffield College of Art-now Sheffield Hallam and worked closely with and the works of such artists as Picasso (25 October 1881-8 April 1973), Matisse (31 December 1869-3 November 1954), David Hockney (9 July 1937-11 June 2026), Euan Uglow (10 March 1932-31 August 2000) and Oskar Kokoschka (1 March 1886-22 February 1980), after which he was employed by Brunel University 1969-2006 with his final 25 years as curator of the Gallery and Art Collection, the University awarded him an Honorary Fellowship in 2008. Alan, who has been paintings and drawing trees, landscape, and people since childhood, moved from West London to Suffolk in 2007 and lived at Halesworth. Bennett painted in oils especially landscapes with a profusion of trees and the tree species can be instantly identified. His work has been exhibited at the Royal Academy also showing at the Nature in Art Gallery and Museum at Wallsworth Hall, Twigworth, near Gloucester; Beldam Gallery at the Brunel University, London, and other galleries, particularly in East Anglia including the Halesworth Gallery and at the invitation of the Dean and Canons of St George's Chapel, Windsor Castle, the artist had a solo show of 39 paintings and drawings there in 2002. He donated a work to the 'Westhall Secret Postcard Auction' in 2012 'Spring Woodland' and in 2013 a pencil sketch 'Cedar and St Andrew's Church'. Alan Bennett died on 1 May 2025.
