BROADWATER, Michael John
Michael John Broadwater was born at Wisbech, Cambridgeshire in 1939, son of Clifford Broadwater (1 July 1913-1 January 1977), a manager for an assurance company, and his wife Hilda Mary née Hubbard (28 July 1914-1 September 2003), who married at St Peter's Church, Wisbech on 26 December 1936. Early in 1939, the family were living at High Street, Downham Market, Norfolk where his grandfather John Broadwater, had a grocery and drapery shop. Mike was educated at Unthank College and studied at Norwich School of Art and Brighton College of Art and was a keen photographer but has been painting since the early 1960s, also teaching in schools and colleges with residential courses including at Newmarket, Bury St Edmund's, Snape and Ipswich. He married at Newmarket in 1966, Elaine W. I. Pledger (born 1942). Mike paints in oil and watercolour but also continuing with imaginative acrylic painting, exhibiting widely in East Anglia, including Chimney Mill Galleries, West Stow, near Bury St Edmund's. Mike is now concentrating on printmaking at a private studio in Bury St Edmund's. A member of the Suffolk Art Society, Bury St Edmund's Art Society and the Gainsborough's House Gallery. He is also the author of the 'Dale Allen' stories.
