Arthur Butler

Arthur Butler was born at 32 Whitehall Street, Wakefield, Yorkshire on 5 August 1918, son of Sydney Arthur Butler (5 July 1885-20 September 1977), a carpet manufacturer, and his wife Ethel née Lucas (26 July 1884-1975), who married at Wakefield in 1907. In 1911, his parents were living at 32 Whitehall Street, Wakefield, 25-year-old Sydney, and his 26-year-old wife Ethel with two children, 3-year-old Marjorie and 1-year-old Herbert. Arthur studied at Wakefield College and at the Royal College of Art and in 1939 was a student, living at 74 Balne Lane, Wakefield with his parents. Arthur specialised in watercolours, of architectural and topographical scenes and exhibited at the Royal Academy. By 1966, Arthur was the proprietor of the Barge Gallery, Reliance, Pin Mill, Ipswich, and a quote on the gallery from 'Suffolk Art 1966', 'An unusual gallery is to be found in beautiful surroundings at the popular yachting centre of Pin Mill. The Gallery is housed on board the 60-year-old 'Reliance' in what were the seamen’s quarters in the foc’sle, and provides space for about sixty pictures. Arthur Butler, ARCA, keeps a varied show of his own work and exhibits guest artists, including oil, watercolour, prints, pottery, woodcarving, and drawing'. Arthur Butler died at Ipswich on 8 October 2003. His daughter is Charlotte Harvey.
