PORTEOUS-BUTLER, David
David George Porteous-Butler was born in Marylebone, North London in 1945, son of Nathaniel Sylvian Porteous-Butler (4 May 1907-July 1997), a ladies neckwear manufacturer, and his wife Ivy Nancy née Pressler (24 December 1909-15 December 2002), who married at Edmonton in 1932 and in 1939 were living at 74 Milton Park, Hornsey, Middlesex. David was educated at Highgate School, London and later studied with Sir Kyffin Williams R.A. (1918-2006) and Anthony Green R.A. (born 1939) before being offered a place at the Royal College of Art. He delayed his launch into the art world until after a career as a successful fashion designer which heightened his awareness of shape and form before returning to his true vocation as a painter and sculptor. In 1978 he settled at The Studio, Warrens, Powney Street, Milden, near Lavenham in Suffolk and, like his mentor Kyffin Williams, has a passion for the vitality of the landscape and the changing light around him with Suffolk providing much inspiration. Working usually with a palette knife, his integrity is evident in a commitment to portray the energy and life of his subject and the experience in creating the work, lives large in the finished piece and to enjoy in the pleasure of its creation. He has exhibited at Buckenham Galleries, Southwold; the Lime Tree Gallery, Bristol; Mandell’s Gallery, Norwich; Clarendon Galleries, London; The Albany Gallery, 74b Albany Road, Cardiff and elsewhere. He married in 1966 Barbara Critchley and their son is artist Peter Benedict Porteous-Butler (1969-). David’s work is in collections in the UK, France, Italy and the USA.
