COUGHLAN, Shirley Lyall
As Shirley Lyall Moody, she was born at Castle Ward, Northumberland on 26 February 1932, daughter of Thomas Moody (11 June 1901-16 August 1970), a schoolmaster, and his wife Margaret Coney (28 June 1903-1974), youngest daughter of Supt. Frederick Charles Coney, chief Fire Officer of Gosforth Fire Brigade, who married at St Nicholas Parish Church, Gosforth on 22 May 1926. As Shirley Lyall Moody, she married at Ipswich in 1974, Patrick James Coughlan (7 November 1926-29 March 2005) and painted under the name of Shirley Coughlan. Shirley was educated at Colchester County High School for Girls and studied at Colchester School of Art 1949-1951 and at University College London, Institute of Education 1953-1954 and studied under John O'Connor, Blair Hughes-Stanton and Carel Weight (1908-1997), gaining a National Diploma in Design in 1953 and an Art Teachers' Certificate the following year. Her work consisted of printmaking, drawing, painting, ceramics, textiles and collages and she exhibited at Young Contemporaries; Laing Art Gallery; Eastern Open Art Exhibition, Kings Lynn; Gainsborough's House Museum and Gallery, Sudbury; and elsewhere. She exhibited at the Ipswich Art Society from 26 Warrington Road, Ipswich in 1997 'Variations'. Shirley Lyall Coughlan died on 8 August 2020. She signed her works with initials 'SLC'.
