CLARK, Jean Manson

1902 - 1999

As Jean Manson Wymer, she was born at Sidcup, Kent on 6 August 1902, second of the two children of Daniel William Wymer (12 February 1863-24 June 1944), a mechanical engineer, and his wife Jean Renwick née Cuthbert (19 January 1863-17 April), who married at Chelsea, London in 1896. In 1911, young Jean was an 8-year-old living at 34 Stanhope Road, Sidcup with her parents, 48-year-old Daniel and 48-year-old Jean, her elder brother Francis John Clark (1898-1976), was absent. Jean was educated at Merton Court School, Sidcup and then studied at Sidcup School of Art under Cecil Ross Burnett (1872-1933), followed by the Royal Academy Schools and Académie Julian, Paris. In 1924, she married fellow artist John Cosmo Clark (28 January 1897-7 August 1967), a former chairman of Chelsea Arts Club and painted under the name of Jean Clark. A painter in watercolour, oil and tempera of landscapes, portraits and figure subjects and was a member and exhibitor at the Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours and the New English Art Club and exhibited at the Royal Academy 1945-1972 and the Royal Society of British Artists. Jean lived at 16 St Peter's Square, Hammersmith, London for many years but following her husband's death in 1967, Jean Clark moved to 2 Church Cottage, Church Lane, Shottisham, Woodbridge, Suffolk. She exhibited at the Ipswich Art Club from Church Lane Cottage, Shottisham in 1977, two paintings 'Early Summer' and 'The Deben River from Ramsholt', one in 1978 'The Old Mill Pond, Norfolk', two in 1979 and three in 1980 from the same address 'The Windrush, Burford', 'The Sunlit Cottage' and 'Roses in the Studio' and was a regular exhibitor. Jean Manson Clark died at Saxtead, Suffolk on 29 March 1999, leaving an only daughter.
