HASLEN, Andrew

Andrew Paul Haslen was born in the Chelmsford district of Essex in December 1953, his mother’s maiden name was Bowyer. He commenced as a landscape artist, being taught in oils before deciding to pursue his lifelong interest in painting and sketching British wildlife. Although his preferred medium is watercolour, he also paints using oils and produces linocuts, screen-prints and sculpture. Most of his work concentrates on animal subjects, especially hares, a creature he finds continually fascinating to draw and paint, other subjects include birds, especially the more colourful, such as woodpeckers and the kingfisher and he is the author of 'The Winter Hare' (2012). Selected as an exhibitor at 'Birds in Art Exhibition' at Leigh Yawkey Art Museum, Wisconsin, USA on three occasions. In 1988 Andrew founded the Wildlife Art Gallery at 98-99 High Street, Lavenham, Suffolk and in the same year elected a member of the Society of Wildlife Artists and invited to join the Artists for Nature Foundation’s expeditions to Holland in 1990, Poland in 1992, and Alaska and Ireland in 1995. Winner of the Royal Society for Nature Conservation ‘Natural World’ Art Award in 1992 and in 1997 and Runner-up in 1993, and winner of the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds Art Award 1996 and 1999. He married in the Sudbury district of Suffolk in 2005, Margarita Alison Curry and lives at College Farm, Preston St Mary, Sudbury, Suffolk with his wife and two daughters.
