Katherine Hamilton

As Katherine Jane Hamilton Gault, she was born at Midhurst, Sussex in 1954, second of the five children of David Hamilton Gault (9 April 1928-29 November 2021) and his wife Felicity Jane née Gribble (1929-19 June 2017), who married at Harting, near Petersfield in July 1950, Katherine was a sister to Annabel Gault. Katherine was educated at Dartington Hall School in Devon and studied drawing and painting at The Academy, Florence 1971, and at the Byam Shaw School of Art 1971-1974, followed by dance, music, and choreography at the London School of Contemporary Dance 1974-1977. For many years Kate worked with dance companies in New York, London and Amsterdam, painting in her spare time. In 1984 she moved to Italy to become a full-time painter, before moving to the Pyrenees and finally Mallorca, and her work reflects the colourful environments where she has lived. Kate married and divorced twice and from 1992, her home was at Hill House, 61 Covert Road, Reydon, near Southwold in Suffolk, where she found inspirational imagery for her painting along the Suffolk coast and worked on a suitably elongated canvas of a view of Southwold pier. As Katherine or Kate Hamilton, has regularly exhibited at Mandell’s Gallery, Norwich and has exhibited at the Royal Academy and in many other mixed shows and has had solo exhibitions at the Christopher Hull Gallery 1985 and the Sue Rankin Gallery in 1991 and, as Kathleen Hamilton, at Chappel Galleries, Essex in 1998 who, in 2004 organised her 'Coastal Journeys' show with an illustrated monograph by David Buckman.
