As Mary Ward, she was born at Hunstanton, Norfolk in 1951, daughter of Maurice Cyril Ward (born 16 June 1923) and his wife Olwen Marguerite née Paige (1925-7 January 2016), who married at Fakenham, Norfolk in 1944. Mary studied part-time at Norwich School of Art but is mostly self-taught. She married at Hunstanton in 1974, Richard Gundry and now paints under the name of Mary Gundry. After working for Anglia Television in Norwich, in 1989 she became a full-time painter and illustrator, with her painting capturing children at play which have been reproduced in the form of greetings cards, Christmas cards, limited edition prints and calendars. In 1998 she opened the Garden Gallery at High Street, Southwold, selling her own work complimented by the work of thirty other artists, sculptors, potters etc. but, to concentrate on her painting, in June 2005, she sold the Garden Gallery to Karen Keable, and worked from her studio in nearby Blythburgh. Although her speciality is as a painter in watercolour, Mary experimented with oil paints, enjoying the freedom and flexibility of the medium and regularly undertakes commissions of children enjoying the seaside. In December 2008 Mary, and her partner Colin Huggins, decided to open The Little Gallery at Market Place, Halesworth, Suffolk, selling Mary's work and Colin's photography along with some sculptural work by Michael Simpson and Barry Sutton, together with some ceramics which they ran until 2015. Mary was a member of the Norfolk & Norwich Art Circle 1991-1992 from Stradbroke, Suffolk and has exhibited with the Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours at the Mall Galleries in London in 2006 and 2010; the Society of Women Artists in 2007; Royal Institute of Oil Painters 2014 and 2017, also showing at Inspired By Becker Art Society annual exhibition; Suffolk Open Studios; Art Garden Party at Wissett; Blythburgh Church Exhibition and The Arts, Crafts and Design Fair, Newmarket and elsewhere and was a contributor to 'Westhall Secret Postcard Auction' in 2013 'Time to go Home' and an acrylic 'Shrimping Nets' also contributing to the 'Laxfield Secret Postcard Auction' in 2014.
