BUCK, William

1821 - 1900

William Buck was born at Mattishall, East Dereham, Norfolk on 21 March 1821 and baptised Matthishall Independent Church on 8 April 1821, son of William Buck and his wife Elizabeth née Dawson, who married at East Dereham, Norfolk on 12 July 1802, his brother was John Dawson Buck. William married at Bocking, Braintree, Essex on 4 September 1849, Emily Gosling (30 January 1828-24 January 1887), second daughter of John Gosling of Bocking Brewery. In 1849, a chemist & druggist in High Street, Colchester, but by 1861, a 39-year-old dentist at 27 Head Street, Colchester with his 32-year-old wife and 10-year-old daughter, also named Emily. He took into partnership in his dentist business a Mr Edward Austin Dixon and traded as Buck & Dixon. William was an Alderman for the Borough of Colchester and a magistrate, and by 1871, he and his family, had moved to West Lodge, Lexden Road, Colchester. A member of the Ipswich Fine Art Club 1883-1899 exhibiting from Dereham Place, 2 Lexden Road, Colchester, Essex in 1883, three oils 'Moonlight', 'Pool Waters from Constitution Hill, Bournemouth' and 'Conway Bay from Gt Orme's Head' and a drawing 'Matlock, from High Tor'. In 1884 he exhibited five items 'In Lexden Park', 'Lock Idwall, N. Wales', 'Up the Mountains, Crafnant, N. Wales', 'Quietude at Wroxham' and 'Tide Coming in near Ventnor' and was a regular annual exhibitor including in 1893 'Storming the Castle'. He also exhibited at the Bury St Edmunds Fine Art Society exhibition at the Town Hall, Bury St Edmund's in 1886 an oil 'On the Westmorland Moors' which won the 1 guinea second prize and in 1889 exhibited 'October Glow on the Wye'. William Buck died at Dereham Place, 2 Lexden Road, Colchester on 5 March 1900, leaving an only daughter.
