BUCK, John Dawson
John Dawson Buck was born at Mattishall, East Dereham, Norfolk on 15 May 1816 and baptised at Mattishall Independent Church on 17 June 1816, son of William Buck and his wife Elizabeth née Dawson, who married at East Dereham, on 12 July 1802, his brother was William Buck. John was educated at Highbury College, University of London graduating B.A. in 1841/2. He married at Ipswich on 29 June 1848, Emma Ann, eldest daughter of Charles Burton (1819-20 December 1879) of Sheerness, Kent, when he kept Brook Street School in Lower Brook Street, Ipswich, their youngest daughter was Lucy Margaret Buck. In 1871, a 54-year-old schoolmaster, at his school at Belstead Road, Stoke Hall, Ipswich where he lived with his 51-year-old wife Emma Ann, and six children, Emma Elizabeth 21, John William 19, Charles Burton 14, George Burton 13, Lucy Margaret 11, and Alexander Henry 9, all born at Ipswich, with two other teachers, boarded pupils and three servants. In 1881, of 8 Lower Brook Street, Ipswich ‘B.A. retired schoolmaster’ when he exhibited at the Ipswich Fine Art Club ‘A Portrait’. In 1891, a 74-year-old widower, living on own means, at 10 Beaumont Street, Marylebone, London with his daughter Lucy, but John Dawson Buck died back at 8 Lower Brook Street, Ipswich on 3 May and was buried in Ipswich Cemetery on 7 May 1896, aged 79.
