NEWBERY, Evan Robert Garrood
Evan Robert Garrood Newbery was born at Blackwood, Bedwellty, Monmouthshire on 23 May 1904, son of Robert Newbery (1872-18 July 1938) and his wife Ada Susie née Garrood (30 March 1870-2 September 1971), who married in Mutford, Suffolk in 1901. In 1911, Evan was a 6-year-old living at Green Farm, Saxtead, Suffolk with his parents, 38-year-old Robert, a farmer, and 41-year-old Ada Susie, with his three siblings, William 8, born in Monmouth, George 4 born in Suffolk and Lucy 2, born at Malpas, Cheshire. Evan was educated at Framlingham College, Suffolk and studied art at Borough Road Polytechnic; Hammersmith College of Art; Spring Grove Polytechnic and Harrow School of Art, after which he returned to Suffolk. He exhibited at the Royal Academy also showing in the provinces and in America. In 1939, a school master, living at a guest house, Malaya Rest House, Exeter Road, Dawlish, Devon, with four other school master's when his mother and first wife were living at Pantiles, Waterloo Avenue, Leiston-cum-Sizewell, Suffolk. He married twice, at Ipswich in 1929, Kathleen Irene Davies (3 September 1906-15 December 1988), they had two sons and a daughter, and secondly at Woodbridge, Suffolk in 1972, Jean Audrey Duddy. Evan Robert Garrood Newbery lived at Summer Lane, Bromeswell, Woodbridge, Suffolk and he died at 9 Briarwood Road, Woodbridge on 14 April 1988.
