BARBER, Mary Anne Stannard

1851 - 1921

As Mary Anne Stannard Lucas, she was born at Hythe Street, Colchester, Essex in 1851, daughter of Jonathan Lucas (1819-1855), mariner, and his wife Sarah Elizabeth née Rigg (1823-1893), who married at Colchester in 1847. Her mother married secondly in 1858 William Watts (1803-1886), and in 1861, Mary was a 9 year old living at Hythe Street, Colchester with her grandmother, 66 year old widow Mary Ann Rigg, and with her 37 year old mother, now Sarah Elizabeth Watts, her two siblings Sarah J. 12 and John 7 and her step-sister Elizabeth Lucas Watts 2. Mary married at Colchester in 1872, Alfred Richardson Barber. In 1881, a 29 year old 'artist landscape & animal painter', living at 'Carlton Villas', 1 Wellesley Road, Colchester with her 36 year old husband Alfred, with their three children, Claude Harold 8, Leonard Lucas 4 and newly born Mary Margaret. As Mrs Barber of 1 Carlton Villas, Wellesley Road, Colchester, she exhibited an oil painting at the Woodbridge Industrial and Art Exhibition in 1887, it was not given a title and was on sale for 4.10s. [4.50] and 'highly commended'. By 1911, they had moved to Lower Street, Stratford St Mary, Suffolk where she died in 1921.
