Alfred Richards Barber

Alfred Richardson Barber was born at Colchester, Essex in 1844 and baptised at St Botolph's Colchester on 30 October 1845, second son of Robert Barber, a schoolmaster, and his wife Mary née Richardson, who married at Newport Pagnell, Buckinghamshire in 1843. In 1851, Alfred was a 7-year-old living at East Hill, Colchester with his parents, 42-year-old Robert, who was born Kelsale, Suffolk, and 31-year-old Mary and his three siblings, Robert 8, born Newport Pagnell, Horace James 4 and Laura Jane 1, both born at Colchester. Alfred married at St Leonard's Church, Colchester on 24 June 1872, Mary Anne Stannard Barber née Lucas and in 1891, a 46-year-old teacher of drawing and an artist, living at 1 Carlton Villas, [13] Wellesley Road, Colchester with his 39-year-old wife Mary Anne and their four children, Leonard Lucas 14, Mary Margaret 10, Dorothy Beatrice 7 and Geoffrey Robert 1, all born at Colchester. Barber specialised in animal and still life paintings and first exhibited at the Ipswich Fine Art and Industrial Exhibition in 1868, his work receiving a Certificate of Merit. He also showed at the Royal Society of British Artists, Suffolk Street, London 1879-1893 including in 1879 'Rabbits and Partridge' and in 1884 'Helping Themselves'. A member and exhibitor at the Ipswich Fine Art Club 1893-1911, exhibiting from Wellesley Road, Colchester three oil painting in 1893 'October', 'Playful Models' and 'Little Robert and Sheep's Parsley'. In 1901 a 56-year-old artist (painter) and teacher of drawing and painting still living at Wellesley Road but latterly lived at Ivydene, 69 Station Road, Clacton-on-Sea, Essex. Alfred Richardson Barber died at Lower Street, Stratford St Mary, Suffolk on 14 October 1924, aged 80. His painting 'A Family of Rabbits' sold at Christie's New York 'Old Master & 19th Century Paintings, Drawings, & Watercolors' in 2010 for $23,750.
