1944 - 2002

Kenneth William Back, was born at Guildford, Surrey on 2 April 1944, son of Lawrence Back (1901-1969) and his wife Winifred A. née Simpson (1900-1949), who married at Dover, Kent in 1933. Educated at Astor School, Dover and studied at Dover, Folkestone and Canterbury Schools of Art 1959-1964, and at the Royal Academy Schools 1964-1967. An artist in oil and ink, and a teacher at Suffolk College 1971-1995 and exhibited frequently at the Royal Academy 1965-1993. He also exhibited at Piccadilly Gallery; Park Walk Gallery, London and Discerning Eye 1990-1992 and was a member of the Suffolk Group of Artists which included an exhibition 'Walberswick Post-War to Present' at Chappel Galleries, Essex in 1998. He married at Walberswick, Suffolk in 1970, Corinne Roberts-Jones (1944-1996) and they had a son and a daughter. He latterly lived at White Cottage, 135 Semere Green Lane, Dickleburgh, Diss on the Suffolk/Norfolk border and died on 25 July 2002 and two years later the Graham & Oldham gallery in Ipswich mounted 'The Ken Black Legacy' featuring some of the works of his students. His paintings are represented in Nuffield Collection and St John's College, Oxford and elsewhere.
