CHORLEY, Adrian William Herbert

1906 - 1983

Adrian William Herbert Chorley was born at East Bergholt, Suffolk on 25 April 1906, son of Herbert Edward Chorley, barrister-at-law, and his wife Katherine Margaret née Baker (28 September 1878-5 September 1955), daughter of Albert de Winter Baker, M.R.C.S., of Battersea Park, who married at St Mary Abbots Church, Kensington, London on 28 July 1900. Adrian attended St Paul's School and studied at Byam Shaw School of Art 1924-1927 and at the Royal College of Art and exhibited at the Royal Institute of Oil Painters from 15 Whitehall Gardens, Acton Hill in 1924 'Morning Sunlight'. He married at Kensington in 1927, Jenny Chorley née Nancy Rodyk, and they had one son. They lived at Sherden Manor, Edenbridge, Kent but by 1939, Adrian was a draughtsman architect, living at Yard Farm, Russ Hill, Dorking, Surrey with his wife and widowed mother before returning to live in Suffolk. A painter, draughtsman, and printmaker, specialising in landscapes, and had been a member of the Ipswich Art Club 1927-1928, also exhibiting at the Royal Academy 1925-1952; the Royal Institute of Oil Painters, Royal Society of British Artists and the New English Art Club and Paris Salon. He exhibited at the Bury St Edmund's Art Society in 1948 from Drinkstone, Suffolk an oil, 'Siesta' and re-joined the Ipswich Art Club and, as a member, exhibited from 'The Oaks', Boxted, Suffolk in 1977, four paintings, 'Bourne Bridge', 'St Dye sur Loire', 'Chateau Gaillard' and 'Mill in Dordogne', two in 1978 'Beaumont Quay, Essex' and 'Ipswich Docks' and three in 1979 'Nayland', 'Ellingham Mill' and 'Ladykirk, Scotland'. In 1980 he exhibited at Ipswich from Driftway, Cox Hill, Boxford, Suffolk, three painting, 'Burnham Overy Mill', 'Boxford, Suffolk' and 'Les Junies, near Cahors'. Adrian William Herbert Chorley died at Driftway, Cox Hill, Boxford on 28 August 1983. He signed his work 'Adrian Chorley'.
