PHILLIPS, Helen Mary Maria
As Helen Mary Maria Davis, she was born at Paganhill, Stroud, Gloucestershire on 24 February 1880, eldest daughter of William George Davis, a market gardener, and his wife Jane née Allen, who married at Gloucester in 1880. In 1881, Helen was a 1-year-old, living at Hill Field, Stroud with her parents, 30-year-old William and 30-year-old Jane and by 1891 they were living at Queen Street, Gloucester with William, now a butler, and with three further daughters, twins Violet J. and Louisa both 9 and Florence Margaret 6, all born in Gloucestershire. Helen went into domestic service and in 1911, a 29-year-old cook, in the household of 65-year-old widow Rosa James of 1 Palace Yard, Gloucester. She married at Stow-on-the-Wold, Gloucestershire in 1919, as his second wife, Lionel William Phillips (7 November 1870-1949), an agricultural engineer, from when she painted under the name of Mrs. Helen M. Phillips. A member and exhibitor at the Norfolk & Norwich Art Circle in 1937 from Beccles, Suffolk and an associate member of the Ipswich Art Club 1938-1939 and exhibited from 13a Blyburgate, Beccles, two works 'Still Life' and 'Marie May, Beccles'. By 1939, they had returned to Gloucestershire living at Landsdowne, Bourton-on-the-Water, North Cotswold where Helen Mary Maria Phillips died in 1951.
