SNOW, Grace Ethel

1885 - 1958

As Grace Ethel Barton, she was born at Hackney, London on 2 April 1885, daughter of Lewis James Barton (1848-1 July 1910), a banker's clerk, and his wife Elizabeth née Payne (c1850-2 January 1920), who married at Camberwell, London in 1878. In 1901, Grace was a 15-year-old, living at 10 Paget Road, Stoke Newington, Hackney, London with her parents, 52-year-old Lewis and 51-year-old Eliza, with two siblings, Arthur Lewis 21 and Hubert Ernest 19, both born at Hackney. Grace married at Hendon, Middlesex in 1910, Arthur Snow and in 1911 was living with her husband at Oakdene, Purley Oaks Road, Sanderstead, Surrey. Together with her husband Arthur, in 1929 they set up the Home School of Crafts at Trout Hall, Wenden's Ambo, Saffron Walden, Essex but by 1934 they had also acquired The Craft Room, near the river at Walberswick, Suffolk but this was ruined in the 1953 floods. A landscape and portrait painter in watercolour and a member of Ipswich Art Club 1934-1936, exhibiting four works including in 1934 'Wendon Willows' and 'Above St Ives Harbour' and in 1936 'Rocks at Mawgan Porth' and a portrait. In 1939, an artist living at Trout Hall, Saffron Walden, Essex with her husband Arthur. Grace Ethel Snow died at Trout Hall, Wenden's Ambo, Saffron Walden, Essex on 1 April 1958, aged 72.
