SNOW, Arthur

1886 - 1966

Arthur Snow was born at Willesdon, Middlesex on 13 December 1886, son of William Ralph Snow (1859-22 January 1928), a lace merchant, and his wife Jessie Ellen née Ralph (1857-16 March 1916), who married at Greenwich on 9 September 1882. In 1891, Arthur was a 4-year-old, living at Cedar Villas, Mill Lane, Hampstead, London with his parents, 32-year-old William and 32-year-old Jessie, with siblings Ralph George 7, John Claude 5 and Jessie Edith 2, all born at Willesden/Hampstead. Arthur married at Hendon, Middlesex in 1910, Grace Ethel Snow, née Barton and in 1911, a 24-year-old lace merchant, living at Oakdene, Purley Oaks Road, Sanderstead, Surrey with his wife Grace. His father, who was chairman of W. R. Snow Co., Ltd., silk merchants and importers, died in Colombo, Ceylon [Sri Lanka] on 22 January 1928. In 1929 Arthur and his wife Grace set up the Home School of Crafts at Trout Hall, Wenden's Ambo, Saffron Walden, Essex and later as The Craft Room, near the river at Walberswick, Suffolk where they displayed handloom weaving, also running a private art school for ladies. Arthur Snow was a landscape painter in oil and watercolour and a member of Ipswich Art Club 1934-1936 and exhibited from Walberswick in 1934, two works 'Willows' and 'A Sunny Farmstead' and in 1936, three works 'Walberswick', 'Duck Street, Wendon' and 'Old Norwich'. In 1939, a hand loom weaver and teacher, living at Trout Hall, Saffron Walden, Essex with his artist wife. Arthur Snow was of Trout Hall, Wendens Ambo, Saffron Walden, when died at the General Hospital, Saffron Walden on 16 October 1966, aged 78.
