PRENTICE, Charles

1858 - 1933

William Charles Prentice, known as Charles, was born at Bromley, Middlesex on 9 January 1858, son of William Prentice (27 March 1824-28 September 1902), merchant, and his wife Emma née Earthy (11 October 1827-4 April 1896), they were both of Stowmarket, Suffolk, who married at Brentford, Middlesex in 1852. In 1861, Charles was 3-year-old Charles living at 12 Church Street, Ipswich with his parents, 37-year-old William and 34-year-old Emma, with a sister 4-year-old Emma Clara, who was born at Ipswich. Charles was educated at Ipswich and in 1881, a clerk in a drug house, boarding at 170 Camberwell New Road, Lambeth with two other Ipswich born boarders, Edgar Buckingham and Trusson Taylor, both 22 but ten years later Charles was a 33-year-old clerk to a coal merchant, back living with his parents at 12 Church Street, Ipswich and a visitor was Edgar Buckingham. By 1911 he had taken over from his father as registrar of births & deaths, still living at 12 Church Street, Ipswich with his 54-year-old spinster sister Emma Clara. A landscape painter in oils and member of Ipswich Art Club 1891-1933 and as Charles Prentice exhibited from 12 Church Street, Ipswich in 1891 'Old Cottages, Playford', in 1893 'Evening' and 'On the Marshes at Homersfield', in 1895 'Sketch on the Gipping' and 'Autumn Sunshine', in 1914 'No.23a Tacket Street, Ipswich', 'Old Town Hall Garden', 'Sketch at Woodbridge' and 'Sketches at Ufford', in 1916 'Malting Yard, Fore Street, Ipswich', 'Wood Sheds, The Grove Ipswich', 'View on Bungay Common', 'Through the Arch, Pont de Clefs, Canal de Mendfriers, Bruges', 'Lower Orwell Street, Ipswich', 'Pond Hall on the Orwell' and 'Market Place, Bungay' and exhibited nearly every year including in 1923 six oil paintings 'Old Cottage, Bacton, Suffolk', 'Back of the Swan Inn, King Street, Ipswich', 'Woodbridge Mill', 'Ufford Mill', 'The Maybush, Waldringfield' and 'Sunset' and in 1927 three oils 'Old Ship Inn, Back Hamlet', 'Old Houses formerly on the site of St Mary Elms School' and 'View of Woodbridge from Sutton' showing at least 134 works mostly buildings being cleared and landscapes, including 'Firs, Stowmarket', 'Bealings Church', 'Blakenham Mill' and 'Wortwell Marshes'. His last exhibits at Ipswich Art Society were in 1934 under 'The late Chas. Prentice' when his 'The Wye Valley' was on show. As Charles Prentice of Ipswich was also a member and exhibitor at the Norfolk & Norwich Art Circle in 1932. William Charles Prentice died at 12 Charles Street, Ipswich on 30 December 1933, aged 75, he was unmarried. He signed his works 'C. P.'.
