WALPOLE, Josephine
As Josephine Ailsa Horn, she was born at Cockfield, Suffolk on 27 April 1926, daughter of James Joseph Horn (11 April 1877-1947), of Polish descent and a farm manager at Haughley Park, Suffolk, and his wife Alice née Johnston (27 June 1894-28 September 1970), who married at Bury St Edmund's, Suffolk in 1925 and in 1939 were living at Home Farm, Haughley. Josephine was educated at the East Anglian School for Girls, Bury St Edmund's and Notre Dame High School, Norwich and studied art privately under Stuart Scott Somerville. She married at North Walsham, Norfolk in 1954, Derek William Walpole (9 February 1929-1 March 2020) and for many years they ran the Broadway Bookroom, 28 Orwell Road, Felixstowe. They lived at 77 Queen's Road, Felixstowe from where Josephine was an artist and their shop also sold artists' materials and prints. Later Josephine was the proprietor of the Deben Gallery at Woodbridge, Suffolk 1963-1993 living at The Green House, 15 Cooper's Road, in the adjoining village of Martlesham. Author of at least twelve art books including 'Vernon Ward' (1988) and 'Rose in a Suffolk Garden' (1990). She exhibited in London and in Suffolk. Josephine Ailsa Walpole died in Suffolk on 2 May 2011.
