GARRETT, Dorothy Mabel
As Dorothy Mabel Ellen Herring, she was born at Ipswich on 2 November 1908, eldest daughter of Henry Herring (22 July 1872-9 March 1954), a general labourer, and his wife Minnie née Parmenter (21 February 1873-1944), who married at Ipswich in 1895. In 1911, the family were living at 96 New Cut West, Ipswich with five of their then surviving children, Maurice William 15, Alfred William 13, Silas Leonard 8, Felix Valentine 6 and Dorothy 2. Dorothy studied at the Ipswich School of Art under George Rushton. She married at Ipswich in 1932, Redvers Horatio Garrett (25 September 1905-1972), a local government officer, and as Dorothy Garrett worked for several years as Art Therapist at Ipswich Group Hospital and in 1939, was living at 42 Rosehill Road, Ipswich with her husband. A member and exhibitor at the Ipswich Art Club from 20 Belstead Avenue, Ipswich from 1949 and a member of the Norfolk & Norwich Art Circle 1952-1986 from Ipswich. She exhibited at the Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours and the Royal Institute of Oil Painters and had several exhibitions in Ipswich and Bury St Edmund's, particularly her flower pieces and her watercolour 'Sunshine and Showers' was shown at the centenary exhibition of the Ipswich Art Club in 1974 and her paintings were also exhibited in London and Paris. Dorothy Mabel Ellen Garrett died at Brandon, Suffolk on 9 May 2000.
