ALLEN, Marion Stella
As Marion Stella Swannell, she was born at 10 Woburn Street, Ampthill, Bedfordshire on 12 December 1912, second child and eldest daughter of Walter Swannell (14 December 1885-31 May 1972), a baker, and his wife Annie Lizzie née Keep (26 September 1887-1977), who married at Bedford in 1909. Marion married at Bedford in 1936, Norman Stanley Gordon Allen (31 August 1910-18 March 1975) and after the Second World War they came to live at 32 Corder Road, Ipswich. Marion studied life and plant drawing at the Ipswich School of Art and trained as an illustrator at studios in London. She had commenced painting in oils, but under the instruction of Cor Visser, became more interested in watercolours. A founder member of the Orwell Art Club in 1947 and a member of the Ipswich Art Club from 1949 where she exhibited in 1974, a watercolour 'Flowers from the Hedgerow' and from 664 Norwich Road, Ipswich in 1977 'Framsden Mill'. Marion Stella Allen died at Little Lodge, 830 Foxhall Road, Ipswich on 27 December 1979.
