BITTEN, Joseph William
Joseph William Bitten was born at Sudbury, Suffolk on 25 February 1893 and baptised at Sudbury on 11 November 1894, son of Frederick William Bitten (1864-August 1896) and his wife Jessie née Brown (9 July 1868-1948), who married at Sudbury in 1888 and they later went to live at Mile End, London where Frederick was a railway porter, but he died back in Sudbury in 1896. Joseph's mother Jessie married again at Sudbury on 23 August 1898, widower Isaac Goody (1867-25 September 1935), a matmaker. In 1911, Joseph was an 18-year-old silk weaver, living at 67-68 Church Street, Sudbury with his 42-year-old mother Jessie and 43-year-old stepfather Isaac, with his 15-year-old brother Benson 15, and stepsiblings, Albert 11, Kate 8, Alfred 7 and Donald 2. Joseph married at Sudbury in 1917, Annie Ada Mitchell (25 January 1894-1974). Joseph was a painter in oils and exhibited at Gainsborough's House Museum and Gallery and Sudbury Library and in 1980 exhibited at Christchurch Mansion, Ipswich, an oil 'Suffolk Horse Ploughing'. Joseph William Bitten died at Colchester, Essex in 1986.
