COLLER, Edward Henry
Edward Henry Coller was born at South Hamlet, Gloucester on 15 June 1875, son of William Henry Coller, (30 April 1843-23 December 1905), a coal merchant's managing clerk, and his wife Mary Ann née Wyman (1834-1917), who married at Gloucester in 1866. By 1898, when he first exhibited at the Ipswich Fine Art Club, he was a draughtsman in the land valuation revenue office living in Ipswich and he married at Ipswich in 1902, Margaret Alice Haggar (20 August 1878-2 August 1961) and they lived at Glevum, Foxhall Road, Ipswich. In 1906, Coller was the architect who designed the then new Congregational Church on the corner of Spring Road/Cowper Street, Ipswich when his office was at the Old Post Office Building, Butter Market, Ipswich. In 1911, a 35-year-old living at 58 Foxhall Road, Ipswich with his 32-year-old wife Alice and their two daughters, 6-year-old Dorothy and 3-year-old (Marjorie) Joan, all born at Ipswich. A member of Ipswich Fine Art Club 1906-1956 and was a regular exhibitor showing from 67 Corder Road, Ipswich in 1916 seven works, 'Wimbledon Common', 'In the Cotswolds', 'The Severn at Wainlodes', 'Sketch', 'Rocks at Newquay', 'Willows' and 'Low Tide on the Severn', in 1923 nine works, watercolours 'The Rock Column', 'Oncombe Point, Exmouth', 'Ufford Meadows', 'The Stackyard', 'Spring Sketch', 'A Street in Painswick', 'A Cotswold Valley', 'A Farm in the Cotswolds' and a pen & colour drawing 'The Cliff' and in 1927 ten watercolours, 'Pin Mill', 'Constable's House, Flatford', 'Martlesham', 'The Orwell from Gainsborough Lane', 'A Spring Day, Barham', 'Martlesham Creek', 'Sketch at Kesgrave', 'The Deben near Woodbridge', 'Waldringfield' and 'Lower Ufford' and in 1932 further six watercolours. In 1939, a surveyor and an architect, still living at 67 Corder Road, Ipswich with his wife Margaret. He exhibited again at the Ipswich Art Club in 1944 six works, 'Felixstowe Ferry', 'Bluebell Wood', 'Near Lizard Head', 'Low Tide, Newquay', 'Woodbridge' and 'Perth' and at the centenary exhibition of the Club in 1974 two of his watercolours were on display, 'Rheidol Valley from Rheidol Falls Station' and 'River Orwell from Freston'. The late Queen Mary was a purchaser of his pictures. Edward Henry Coller, died at 67 Corder Road, Ipswich on 1 September 1956.
