CUFAUDE, Francis

Francis Cufaude, a member of a family that originally came from Hampshire. A descendant of Simeon Cufaud (born 1621), who married Mary, daughter of Richard Godfrey of Kings Lynn, Norfolk, they had four children Matthew, John, Simeon and Francis. In 1722, Francis Cufaude was apprenticed to the Worshipful Company of Painter-Stainers but by the early 1740s had returned to work in Norfolk and Suffolk. He worked at Denton Rectory, Norfolk where he painted two portraits of Revd Mathew Postlewaite, a small full length and an oval miniature, also painting a view of the rectory which was 122cm long by 56cm wide. Two Suffolk portraits at Ipswich Art Gallery are dated 1745 and 1749. His daughter Mary, married at Norwich on 16 August 1752, Robert Linger.
