SWALLOW, Jon
Jon D Swallow was born in Wales in 1942. Jon was an architect by profession, a successful career that had taken him from urban and rural England to the towering peaks of modernity in Dubai. Jon married at Chichester in 1970, Susan J. Sturtivant and around the year 2000 Jon and his wife Su settled in Suffolk and since moving to Suffolk his lifelong hobby of painting has had a chance to develop. In retirement his time is now occupied with his watercolour painting with the Suffolk scenery from their home at Eastbridge, a small, picturesque village in Suffolk, known for its proximity to the RSPB Minsmere Reserve and the Suffolk Heritage Coast. Jon likes to work on Fabriano Artistico 600 gsm rough paper, using big brushes, often painting wet on wet and allowing ‘mistakes’ to enhance the finished work. He chooses a palette that is sympathetic to the landscape, including French ultramarine blue, burnt umber and yellow ochre. Vast falling skies, winter trees, wet marshes, windswept reed beds and wildlife are among his favourite subjects and if the weather allows, he works outside, otherwise making quick pencil or paint sketches, and occasionally photographs, in situ, to develop back in the studio. He has exhibited with the Southwold Art Circle; Old Print Works Gallery in Saxmundham and in Lavenham, and Eastbridge and elsewhere.
