WESTGATE, Herbert Charles

1866 - 1945

Herbert Charles Westgate was born at Upper Brook Street, Ipswich on 15 August 1866, son of William Thomas Westgate (27 February 1827-19 December 1881), a barber, and his wife Mary Ann Bridget née Hartridge (1833-17 June 1902), who married at Ipswich in 1859. His father gave up hairdressing and took the 'Lock Tavern', New Cut West, Ipswich where he died in 1881, when his widow took over the public house and Herbert subsequently succeeded his mother. Herbert studied at the Ipswich School of Science & Art and passed with a certificate in Freehand Drawing in 1880 and Perspective in 1886. He married at Ipswich in 1889, Isabel Moss and in 1891, a 'public house manager, steamboat agent and ticket writer' at the 'Lock Tavern' with his wife and a young child. He took an early interest in art and was a watercolour artist & designer who exhibited at the Ipswich Fine Art Club as early as 1883 when he exhibited from New Cut, Ipswich, two watercolours 'HMS Penelope entering Harwich Harbour' and 'His Grace the Duke of Hamilton's Steam Yacht' and in 1884 'The Last of the Gale' and 'Colliers, Past and Present' and was a regular exhibitor becoming a member 1900-1901, exhibiting over twenty-eight works including in 1889 'Autumn Afternoon', a cover design, and in 1901 'Fitting Out'. He also exhibited from the Promenade, Ipswich at the Woodbridge Fine Art Exhibition at the Lecture Hall, Woodbridge in April 1887, two watercolours 'Farewell' and 'Armed Cruisers'. About 1907 he left Ipswich for Norwich where he was 'agent & secretary of the National Trade Defence Association, Eastern District' an association to protect those in the liquor industry, living at 31 Britannia Road, Norwich. In 1939, a trade defence secretary, a widower living at 6 Mount Pleasant, Norwich with an unmarried daughter Kathleen (18 August 1893-1966). Herbert Charles Westgate died at Norwich on 24 March 1945, aged 67. He had at least ten children.
