SMITH, Emily Machell

As Emily Smythies Greene was born at Bury St Edmund's, Suffolk on 24 October 1840 and baptised at St Mary's Church, Bury St Edmund's on 4 December 1840, daughter of Edward Greene (17 August 1815-15 April 1891), a brewer, and his wife Emily née Smythies, who married at Peterborough in 1840. She married at Great Malvern, Worcestershire on 24 September 1864, Frederick Machell Smith (c1831-19 November 1905), a banker and wine merchant, and in 1871 they were living at Westgate Street, St Mary, Bury St Edmunds with their 2-year-old daughter Kathleen Machell, who was born in Bury St Edmund's, and several servants. Emily Machell Smith exhibited at the Bury St Edmund's Fine Art Society in 1882. Emily Smythies Machell Smith died at 36 St Mary's Terrace, Kensington, London on 10 November 1924, leaving her estate to he daughter Kathleen Machell Bradshaw-Isherwood.

Frederick Machell Smith was born in Routh, East Riding of Yorkshire, and baptised on 15 June 1831, son of Edward William Smith and his wife Matilda. He married at Saint Mary, Great Malvern, Worcester on 26 September 1864 Emily Smythies Greene. Frederick was a banker and a wine merchant. They lived at Bury St Edmund's but by 1891 Frederick was a retired banker and living with his wife and daughter at Cranley Mansion, 1 Brechin Place, Kensington. He died at 6 Cranley Mansions, Gloucester Road, Kensington, London on 19 November 1905 and buried in Brompton Cemetery four days later.
